American Summer

Poems written while traveling.

Untitled (Wyoming)

Why is it always the natural case
that when we travel we see faces

of people we met: ran into Terri Garr
and her young daughter at a Pizza Hut

in Rawlins, Wyoming.  What honey luck;
she was with a gentleman we did not know.

But out of courtesy, out of a true respect
I let her step in front of me

in the short line for the salad bar
and pluck the last, shining, red tomato.

Why is it always the case when we travel?
We see faces of people we never considered
      we'd met.
