Distraction

Either sanction or blame, the rest being optional—
you want to encounter a landscape that remains

meaningful.  In the unbuttoned shirt of a handy
neighbor who smiles, it will come to you then

as a distraction while he slowly recants a story
through which a hopefulness stays both here
      and there.
But in the lobby it changes into an afternoon
much anticipated, inspiring a series of gentle

recursions where nothing would be heartbreaking.
You carry the token through the doorway and outside

where it partially obscures the gorgeous blue hills
whose provenances still remain unestablished, unevented.
